Cameron Rising is the University of Utah’s starting quarterback.
The redshirt sophomore was revealed as the starter ahead of the long-awaited Utes season opener Saturday evening vs. USC at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Utah’s quarterback situation at the start of fall camp was painted as a three-way competition between Rising, graduate transfer Jake Bentley, and redshirt senior Drew Lisk.
Three became two after one week of camp, and after the Utes scrimmaged for a second and final time in late-October, head coach Kyle Whittingham settled on a starter, but never made him public.
The overwhelming sentiment at one point was that Bentley, with 33 career starts across four seasons at South Carolina, would win the job based on that experience. Rising has never taken a collegiate snap, and has not taken a meaningful snap since his senior year of high school. Lisk has seen limited action as a collegian.
