Civic body worried as locals dump used masks, gloves on Salt Lake roads

KOLKATA: Used masks and gloves are being dumped on the side of the roads and garbage dumps in some areas of Salt Lake, leaving Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation authorities worried. The civic body has been stressing on proper disposal of medical waste.
Civic officials complained that despite continuous awareness, some people are not following the safety and hygiene measures.
“The civic body conservancy workers have been collecting household waste on a daily basis, wearing PPE kits. Separate bins are being placed at houses where a family member has been affected with Covid for disposing off medical wastes like used masks and gloves,” a civic conservancy department official said.
“However, we are noticing that in some places the used masks, gloves or face shields are being thrown out on the roadside waste bins, which is often getting scattered on the road. The conservancy workers are getting a bit apprehensive on how to selectively pick up the thrown off masks or gloves, fearing they might get infected,” the official added.
TOI spotted several places in Salt Lake where such used masks and gloves were seen dumped. Some such places are close to CGO Complex, Karunamoyee and road side corners in many localities. “There should be a proper mechanism for disposing used masks, gloves or other PPE kits,” said Tamal Pal, a resident of HB Block.
