Three southbound lanes of I-15 closed in Salt Lake City after person hit, critically injured by car

SALT LAKE CITY — A man was taken to a hospital in critical condition after being struck by a car on I-15 Monday.

Sgt. Nick Street with the Utah Highway Patrol said the crash occurred near 1000 North on southbound I-15 in Salt Lake City. Fox 13 News first heard report of the crash around 11:18 a.m.

Street said all lanes are blocked in the area with the exception of the HOV lane.

The person who was hit was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Troopres at the scene said the driver had been going the wrong way on the interstate, then pulled over to the emergency lane and got out of the vehicle.

The driver then ran across all lanes of traffic to the HOV lane, then turned around and came back toward the vehicle. Troopers said that’s when he was hit while crossing the interstate.

It’s unclear why the man was in the road, but troopers said it’s possible he had  lost something in the road and went to retrieve.

The man is in his early 30s but has not yet been identified.
