KOLKATA: The only Durga Puja Union home minister and BJP president Amit Shah inaugurated on Tuesday was at BJ block in Salt Lake, and it came within hours of BJP opening its doors to its newest entrant, Sabyasachi Dutta, the former mayor of Bidhannagar.
Prior to this, Bengal BJP had tried to make way to Puja committees in south Kolkata and Howrah, though such efforts were botched up in the final stages. Shah’s visit to BJ block also marked BJP’s entry to Puja inaugurations. Dutta had earlier invited senior BJP leaders — Dilip Ghosh, Kailash Vijayvargiya and Mukul Roy — to a Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Salt Lake.
Shah reached BJ block around 8pm after attending a party meeting. BJP leade-rs, including Datta and organisation secretary of the pa-rty’s state unit Subrata Mukherjee, had already been fine-tuning arrangements. “Amitji has come here to be part of the festival celebrated in Bengal,” Dutta said.
During the inauguration, the BJP president pointed to the winds of change in Bengal, at least in performance of religious festivals. “There was a time when people had to move high court for Durga idol immersion. There was restriction over Basant Panchami. I would request you to celebrate Basant Panchami as you do during Durga Puja,” said Shah.
Shah cited “vote-bank politics” as a reason behind such restrictions. “Our Constitution sees all religious festivals on a par. People can take part in any religious festival. But vote-bank politics in some states has taken away the constitutional right from the people,” Shah said as he addressed a gathering at the BJ block ground.
