In July, the Pac-12 Networks booked a Sept. 28 visit to Utah as part of “The Pregame” show’s tour of all 12 campuses in the conference during the football season. That could turn out to be a very good choice, if the Utes and Washington State remain unbeaten through this weekend.
And that homecoming game may draw even more buildup. Utah is being considered as a host site for ESPN’s “College GameDay” program, the Utah Man Podcast reported. ESPN’s choice hinges partly on the Utes beating USC and WSU defeating UCLA. “GameDay” most recently originated from Utah for a 2016 game vs. Washington.
The Utah-WSU game (8 p.m.) will be televised by FS1, as will Friday’s contest (7 p.m. MDT) vs. USC. The FOX “Big Noon Kickoff” cast that includes former Utah coach Urban Meyer will do a live pregame show from the Los Angeles Coliseum at 6 p.m. Friday.
Utah’s 2019 season is heating up, with the team’s Pac-12 opener. The Utes completed nonconference play with a 31-0 win over Idaho State, looking more impressive from the start than they did against Big Sky Conference opponents in recent years.
No. 18 Utah hosts No. 18 BYU in a big women’s volleyball match Thursday (6 p.m.) at the Huntsman Center. The Utes (8-2) lost two matches in Pepperdine’s tournament last weekend, but they should compete better against BYU (7-2) than last year, when the Cougars swept them in each of two meetings.
USC’s Reign of Troy site analyzed Friday’s matchup (TROY).
Pac-12 expert Jon Wilner made his weekly picks (MERC).
Mike Sorensen of the Deseret News looked at the emergence of Ute receiver Bryan Thompson, a Los Angeles-area product (DNEWS).
The Utah women’s soccer team improved to 4-3 with a 2-0 victory at Nevada last week. The Utes will complete nonconference play with two home games, Friday (5 p.m.) vs. Butler and Sunday (1 p.m.) vs. San Diego.
Utah’s baseball team will begin fall practice Friday and the Utes have scheduled two games vs. BYU: Oct. 5 at Smith’s Ballpark and Oct. 25 in Provo.
The Ute golf team tied for fifth place in a tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz., and Utah’s matching USC’s score was good sign. Utah’s Jordan Costello (71-66-66) tied for 12th place and Mitchell Schow (67-67-71) tied for 18th. The team’s next event is Sept. 27-28 at Albuquerque, N.M.
