Four homeless men were found beaten to death in Manhattan early Saturday morning, police say. A fifth is in critical condition.
All five victims were adult males who suffered trauma to the head, police say.
At 1:49 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of an assault in progress in the Chinatown area. Upon arrival, officers observed an unidentified adult male, unconscious and unresponsive, with severe trauma to the head. EMS pronounced the man dead.
A second man, 49, was transported to New York Downtown Hospital in critical condition.
Police later discovered three more men in the area, all deceased.
A 24-year-old man with a metal object has been taken into custody. The man also appeared to be homeless, police say.
An investigation is ongoing.
Police say a press conference is planned for Saturday morning.
